Anatomy of a snowboarding accident. After a climb a snowboarder and his mates find themselves on cross country ski trails above Super Devoluy on the Pic du Bure but rapidly end up in far less comfortable surroundings in the rarely skied Combe de Baume noire.
Fast forward to 12 minutes in if you want to see the action but it is a fairly instructive video. The snowboarder heads off on an off piste descent on his own. The conditions are marginal, wind scoured with powder pockets and exposed rocks and ice. Even a small windslab could be fatal in these conditions. Unable to see his exit the young man takes his board off and starts to climb on soft boots. A few steps onto ice covered grass and a harrowing descent over rocks followed by a cliff fall. He was lucky but many are not.
