Given the worries about the lack of snow I thought it might be a good idea to give a short video report on the snow conditions in the Belledonne (French Northern Alps) today. I dug a small pit at 2100 meters. There was 30 cm of snow depth. 5cm of refrozen snow with 2 to 3cm of fresh snow on top. The rest of the snow pack was old snow with no obvious weak layer.
The pistes at Chamrousse are in skiable condition. A bit hard in the shade with man made snow with a layer of fresh on top. The off piste is thin in resort but skiable higher up. Some of the closes pistes have rocks on them (Olympic Hommes and Dames) but are skiable with care. I descended by the closed Nivorolles red which had good snow.
