Meteo France has placed the Isere, Savoie  departments on an orange alert for avalanche risk for Saturday (14 Dec 2019).

Three walkers were caught by an avalanche in the early afternoon today while they were walking to the étang de Fontargente in the French Pyrenees in the Ariège department.

A  British woman was revived after spending 6 hours in a state of complete cardio-vascular arrest.

Typically the snowline is some 400 meters below the zero isotherm level. So if the zero isotherm (freezing point) is 2000 meters precipitation will fall as snow to 1600 meters.

As you may have seen some resorts in France have already opened but this weekend things really start to ramp up especially in the Pyrenees and Southern Alps which were blitzed by stormaggedon last wee

Cross country skier Therese Johaug is a huge star in Norway. Since her return to the sport following a drugs ban she has been dominant to the point of eclipsing her nearest opponents.

A 50 year old ski tourer has suffered a broken tibia after being caught by an avalanche on the North side of the emblematic Tournette mountain above Annecy Lake around 16h00 on Sunday.

Two ski tourers have been injured by an avalanche in the Valfréjus ski area on Saturday. The ski lifts are currently closed.

The Savoyard ski resort of Méribel, part of the Three Valleys ski area, wants to build a snowdowe “similar to that in Dubaï”. The project is part of the Chaudanne development plan.

It is a sign of winter. The French avalanche bulletin service has restarted from the 30th October 2019.
