A short reprieve for the ski resort of l'alpe du Grand Serre ski resort near Grenoble. After an appeal for funds raised over 100,000 euros the local community has voted to keep the resort running until September 2025. The initial plan, before the closure vote was for l'Alpe d'Huez to run the resort for two years while it transitioned to an "year round" area.
The 12 month reprieve gives the ski area a chance to explore other solutions but given the area has been teetering on the brink for at least a decade it remains to be seen what they are. The issue the last two season, something that has affected ski areas across France, was lack of snow below 1800 meters. Will this year bring better conditions? Nothing is certain. The mayor sees the future as more state help but with a minority government and perilous state finances it is hard to see where that will come from.
